Lucius Douglass - Artist

'Lucius Douglass is an American abstract painter, born in Chicago in 1992 and working in various countries around the globe. He graduated from Parsons School of Design in 2015 with dual-degrees Bachelors of Arts and Fine Arts focused in Art / History / Industrial Design. The body of his work consists primarily of paintings which mostly use emulsion, acrylic, and oil on hardwood, plywood, plastic and discarded fabrics. His visual language extends a number of traditions, such as Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, into a signature style which celebrates the fluid, organic and tactile qualities of paint while his bright color schemes disrupt the harmonies of modernism. The effects on the viewers are highly evocative and make them complicit of/in whatever figures or narratives are read into the paintings.'

Collaborative Performance

Sesama Gallery, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

In this collaborative performance, L.D performed an improvised ballet dance, wearing a custom-made recycled plastic tutu. Paint dripped off the tutu during the performance, creating a floor-painting. This spillage was then cleaned up, eradicating the proof. The piece reflects the artists childhood tension of dancing ballet in the violent hyper-masculinity of Chicago. The performance embodies our complex relationships with violence, secrets, gender and our true selves.
